Sri Lankan Delegation Joins Asian Elephant Conservation Program in Xishuangbanna
Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province, China, July 16, 2026 – A Sri Lankan delegation participated in the program titled “Harmony Between Humans and Elephants: Coexistence in Peace and Unity”, which featured a field visit and scenario dialogue on wild Asian elephant conservation in China.
The event brought together more than 100 guests from South Asian and Southeast Asian countries and was held at the Xishuangbanna Wild Elephant Valley and the Asian Elephant National Park Nature Education Center in Yunnan Province.
The three-member Sri Lankan delegation attended the program as part of a series of activities in Xishuangbanna. The delegation comprised Mr. Indrananda Abeysekera, President of the Association for Sri Lanka–China Social and Cultural Cooperation (ASLCSCC); Mr. K. D. Parakum Shantha, Mayor of the Dehiwala–Mount Lavinia Municipal Council; and Mr. Lester Rupasinghe, Assistant Secretary of ASLCSCC.
The participants exchanged views on wildlife conservation, ecological protection, and sustainable coexistence between humans and elephants. The program also provided an opportunity for delegates to observe China’s efforts in protecting wild Asian elephants and promoting environmental education and community engagement.
The Sri Lankan delegation actively participated in all events and discussions, strengthening people-to-people exchanges and cooperation between Sri Lanka and China in the fields of environmental conservation and sustainable development.
