The Blue Mystery of Yunnan: Fuxian Lake – Where Nature Meets Ancient Legend

Nestled in China’s Yunnan Province, just 60 to 70 kilometres from the city of Kunming, Fuxian Lake is a destination where breathtaking natural beauty, rich history, and enduring mystery converge. With its sapphire-blue waters, surrounding mountains, and tranquil atmosphere, it is regarded as one of the most beautiful freshwater lakes in China.

I had the privilege of experiencing this wonder firsthand as part of the Sri Lanka-China Media Culture and Education International Training Session held in Yunnan. Our Sri Lankan media team of nineteen members was invited by the Yunnan International Media Center for South and Southeast Asia, coordinated by the President of the Association for Sri Lanka-China Social and Cultural Cooperation and Sri Lanka-China Friendship Ambassador, Indrananda Abeysekara.

The “Blue Eye of Yunnan”

Fuxian Lake is one of China’s deepest freshwater lakes, plunging to approximately 155 metres. It is also the largest deep-water freshwater lake in China, with a water storage capacity four times that of Dianchi and Erhai combined. What truly sets it apart, however, is the exceptional clarity of its waters. Even from the shoreline, rocks and aquatic plants beneath the surface can be seen with remarkable clarity. For this reason, many visitors call it the “Blue Eye of Yunnan.”

A Boat Ride to Remember

One of the most cherished experiences at Fuxian Lake is taking a boat ride. Imagine gliding gently across calm waters, accompanied by soft melodies drifting through the air, cool breezes brushing past, and light raindrops falling in perfect harmony. Yes, we were fortunate enough to experience that moment ourselves – and it became one of the most beautiful memories of our journey through China.

At one point, all of us set our mobile phones aside and simply gazed into the deep blue waters. We wanted to experience the view with our own eyes, not through a camera lens. The vastness of Fuxian Lake and its natural splendour are so captivating that they are difficult to describe in words.

As the morning sun shines upon the water, the lake glitters in silvery hues; at sunset, it transforms into a canvas of golden and orange shades. A boat ride also offers the chance to admire the mountainous surroundings, lakeside villages, and lush green forests in the distance. The water is so clear that in certain areas, even the contours of the lakebed can be observed directly from the boat. It is no wonder Fuxian Lake has become a highly popular destination among photographers and nature enthusiasts.

A Mysterious Sunken City?

Fuxian Lake gained worldwide attention not only for its beauty but also for its mysteries. In 1992, a local diver named Geng Wei discovered large stone structures on the lakebed. Subsequent expeditions in 2001 and 2006 confirmed the existence of a vast architectural complex covering approximately 2.4 square kilometres, featuring stone-paved streets, high-platform stone buildings, and a pyramid-like structure standing 19 metres tall.

According to researchers, these structures may be the ruins of an ancient civilisation or a long-lost city. Some experts believe the city may have sunk during a massive natural disaster 2,000 to 3,000 years ago. Local legends speak of Yuyuan, an ancient city swallowed by an earthquake nearly two millennia ago, mentioned in the “Han Shu” (Book of Han), one of China’s oldest historical texts. Yet the true origin and ownership of this underwater city have not been conclusively determined.

For anyone seeking a brief escape from the demands of urban life, Fuxian Lake is the perfect choice. Its blue waters, fresh air, peaceful environment, and unforgettable boat rides make it one of China’s most memorable travel destinations. The lake’s water is remarkably clean, maintaining China’s highest Class I water quality standard.

As both a magnificent creation of nature and an enduring historical mystery yet to be fully solved, Fuxian Lake continues to shine as a blue paradise that captivates travellers from around the world.
